HC Deb 17 December 1945 vol 417 cc894-5
7. Mr. S. Shephard

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will now allow the sale of fancy lace and lace net in the home market.

Sir S. Cripps

No, Sir. The quantity of yarn that can be provided for the manufacture of fancy laces and lace net is still only small and is all required for export. Production on a limited scale of utility curtain net for the home market is now beginning, but it will be a few months before supplies are available in the shops.

Mr. Shephard

Is the right hon. and learned Gentleman aware that women are utterly disgusted with this unnecessary austerity regulation and that men like to see women and children wearing a bit of lace?

Sir S. Cripps

I am quite aware of that, but I am also aware that exports are essential for this country.
