HC Deb 17 December 1945 vol 417 cc934-5
82. Mr. Keeling

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Burma whether the Far-Eastern Relief Fund will be renamed the Far-Eastern and Burma Relief Fund.

The Under-Secretary of State for Burma (Mr. A. Henderson)

The Far-Eastern Relief Fund is an unofficial fund registered under the War Charities Act, and it is, therefore, not within the province of my Noble Friend to alter the title by which it has been known since its inception in 1942.

Mr. Keeling

As the Minister has already answered b number of questions about the Fund, and as Burma is not in the Far East—it is nowhere near the Far East— will he say how people from Burma are to know that they are eligible to draw relief from this Fund?

Mr. Henderson

The difficulty is that people in the Netherlands East Indies are receiving assistance from this Fund and, therefore, it does not solve the problem by merely extending it to cover Burma.
