HC Deb 13 December 1945 vol 417 cc600-1
31. Colonel Erroll

asked the Minister of Education whether she will improve the accommodation for married resident lecturers at present available at teachers' training colleges.

Miss Wilkinson

This matter will not be overlooked when it is possible to undertake new building work or substantial extensions to existing training college buildings.

Colonel Erroll

Does the right hon. Lady realise that the lack of accommodation is seriously deterring would-be lecturers from taking up posts in training colleges, so jeopardising the success of the training scheme? It is an urgent matter to improve the accommodation.

Miss Wilkinson

I am fully aware that it is an urgent matter. It is equally the fact that it is impossible to do anything about it, except in a rather improvised way. Colleges are meeting the problem in an improvised way, and I would like to say that the staffs, on the whole, appreciate our difficulties.
