HC Deb 12 December 1945 vol 417 c408
54. Mr. Shurmer

asked the Minister of Food if he is aware of the position in the Birmingham Wholesale Fish Market owing to the shortage of labour; if he has considered a letter from the Birmingham Joint Fish Trades' Council; and if he intends to take any action to get men released from the Forces, both for the wholesale and retail fish trades in that city.

Sir B. Smith

Yes, Sir. Of 11 names of ex-employees of fish traders in Birmingham recently submitted for re lease under Class B, one man has refused release, two have already returned from the Forces, and two have been recommended for release. Of the rest, three men were employed by one firm, which has since stated that it requires no further assistance, and the cases of the remaining three did not justify support. While I cannot, therefore, subscribe to the views of the Birmingham Fish Trades' Joint Council about shortage of labour, I am anxious to do all I can to help in suitable cases, and if my hon. Friend cares to bring other names to my notice I shall be glad to consider them.
