HC Deb 05 December 1945 vol 416 cc2308-9
25. Mr. T. Reid

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether it is proposed to alter the prewar constitutional position of Sarawak.

Mr. George Hall

I am in consultation with His Highness the Raja of Sarawak on this question.

Mr. Wilson Harris

Could the right hon. Gentleman say whether in these negotiations the Rajah is being regarded as a kind of autocrat? Seeing that a Constitution was promulgated in 1941, just before the Japanese occupation, would it not be better to wait and see how this Constitution works before altering the status of Sarawak?

Mr. Hall

We regard the Rajah as the representative of Sarawak and we are hoping to arrive at an agreement with him.
