HC Deb 15 November 1944 vol 404 cc1969-70
68. Mr. Evelyn Walkden

asked the Postmaster-General the estimated revenue derived from various sources, directly or indirectly associated with football pools during 1943, including duty on postal orders and payments for postage stamps by pool investors.

The Postmaster-General (Captain Crookshank)

During the year ended 31st of March, 1944, the estimated revenue derived from postage on postings by football pool promoters and their clients was £560,000 and from poundage on postal orders £270,000.

Mr. Walkden

Can the Minister give any comparative figures of pre-war years; and will he see that the people or organisations who desire to abolish football pools, which are popular with the workers, are informed of this profitable enterprise?

Captain Crookshank

I can give no pre-war figures without notice.
