HC Deb 08 November 1944 vol 404 cc1337-8
7. Captain Alan Graham

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will assure the House that His Majesty's Government does not support the policy of the Czecho-Slovak State Council, as expressed by their vice-president, that the precondition of future collaboration between Austria and other nations is that the Austrians should not deny their anschluss with Germany, contrary to the policy of the United Nations in continually urging Austria to rise against German Nazi tyranny.

Mr. Eden

I have made inquiries, but have been unable to obtain any confirmation of the statement referred to by my honourable and gallant Friend. The policy of His Majesty's Government in regard to Austria remains as set out in the Declaration on Austria issued at the Moscow Conference in November, 1943.

8. Captain Graham

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the Atlantic Charter applies to Austria: and whether consequently His Majesty's Government will disavow governments of allied nations which proclaim their intentions to permit or forbid governments other than Fascist or Nazi to function in liberated Austria.

Mr. Eden

I am not clear what my hon. and gallant Friend has in mind nor do I know to what statements by Allied Governments my hon. and gallant Friend refers. As I have stated the policy of His Majesty's Government towards Austria remains as defined in the declaration issued by the Conference in Moscow on the 1st November, 1943.
