HC Deb 01 November 1944 vol 404 cc790-1
37. Mr. Salt

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works whether any tests have been carried out to ascertain the efficiency of the heating arrangements of the various houses to be used as models for post-war plans; and what steps are being taken by his Department to ensure that in post-war British houses the maximum amount of heat, light and power is obtainable from such coal as may be available for these purposes.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works (Mr. Hicks)

Fuel economy depends partly upon the efficiency of the heating unit and partly upon the thermal insulation of the building. The demonstration houses at Northolt were only erected to show alternative methods of construction. They were designed to have a thermal insulation as good as or better than that of a normal brick house. The problem of securing greater efficiency in fuel burning appliances is being actively investigated by the Ministry of Fuel and Power.
