HC Deb 01 November 1944 vol 404 cc773-4
1. Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Secretary of Sttae for Foreign Affairs if he has considered including with the German political war criminals, the big Hitlerite industrialists who financed, and assisted in other ways, the growth of the Hitlerite power; and if he will give the names of such leading men who will be dealt with when action is taken against the political Hitlerites.

The Minister of State (Mr. Richard Law)

In any case where any Germans, including of course industrialists, can he shown to have been guilty of a war crime, it is the intention of His Majesty's Government that steps should he taken to ensure that appropriate punishment is inflicted upon them.

As regards the second part of my hon. Friend's Question, I consider that nothing is to be gained by making public the names of the parties concerned since a list of such names must necessarily be incomplete until all the evidence has been compiled.

Mr. G. Strauss

Would not His Majesty's Government be in great difficulty if they started trying all those who have assisted the Hitlerite movement by financing it; and would these not include many people in this country?
