HC Deb 25 May 1944 vol 400 c912
22. Dr. Little

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will arrange that workers from Northern. Ireland, who have crossed to Britain in order to carry out certain work, will receive exit permits to enable them to return home on the completion of the work for which they were engaged.

Mr. H. Morrison

Travel between this country and Ireland has been suspended except for business or work of urgent national importance or on compassionate grounds of the most urgent or compelling character. Workers such as those to whom my hon. Friend refers will be at liberty to return to Ireland, if they so desire, when the present special restrictions on travel are removed.

32. Dr. Little

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in the interests of business within the United Kingdom, he will make arrangements whereby occasional travel permits will be granted to business representatives in Northern Ireland to enable them to transact their business in Great Britain.

Mr. H. Morrison

Exit permits on business of urgent national importance are granted, in accordance with the terms of the public announcement of 13th March, that is to say, in cases in which a Government Department, whether in Northern Ireland or Great Britain, certifies that the journey is in the national interest and cannot be postponed.
