HC Deb 23 May 1944 vol 400 c572
48. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Prime Minister if it is the intention of His Majesty's Government to bring forward proposals for the compulsory military service of young people in post-war years.

Mr. Attlee

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer which I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Bassetlaw (Mr. Bellenger) on 23rd February last, to which I have nothing to add.

Mr. Sorensen

Can we take it that the speech made by the Minister without Portfolio does not represent either the intention or the desire of the Cabinet, particularly the Labour Members?

Mr. Attlee

I am afraid I have not heard of that speech.

Mr. Sorensen

Is my right hon. Friend not aware that one of his own colleagues said recently that he desired young people to have military service?

Mr. Attlee

I am quite unaware of that speech.
