HC Deb 23 May 1944 vol 400 cc572-3
50. Wing-Commander Hulbert

asked the Prime Minister if he can now make any statement in regard to the activities of Albanian guerillas; and if His Majesty's Government have any information in regard to the political situation in that country.

Mr. Attlee

Guerilla activity is fairly widespread throughout Albania and, with the exception of a few Quisling politicians who have formed a Government in collaboration with the Germans, the Albanian people as a whole are resolutely opposed to the Axis invaders of their country. The guerillas are best organised in the centre and the South.

There are three main organisations. The National Liberation Movement is the most active. It is predominantly Left Wing and its operations are mostly confined to Southern Albania. In the centre there is the Legality Movement of supporters of King Zog, led by Major Abas Kupi. The third organisation is the Balli Kombetar or National Front, a more loosely knit body of Albanian Nationalists. All these groups hold strong political opinions which have sometimes led to clashes between them. His Majesty's Government through their liaison officers in the country are, however, trying to bring them together and to establish a united front of resistance to the enemy.

Mr. James Griffiths

Does it not become clear that both in Albania and elsewhere the real resistance is coming from the workers and peasants?

Mr. Attlee

I should think so. Albania is a country of workers and peasants.

Mr. Riley

Is the Allied Commander sending supplies to the guerillas in Albania?

Mr. Attlee

Yes, we are sending arms and ammunition to various guerilla bands.
