HC Deb 23 May 1944 vol 400 cc564-5
33. Mrs. Adamson

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is aware of the acute shortage of ladies' WX size wearing apparel; and what steps he will take to secure equitable production and distribution.

Mr. Dalton

Dresses in this size are in rather shorter supply than the smaller sizes. In order to encourage manufacturers, who specialise in such dresses, to increase their output, I have decided to offer them a subsidy of one coupon per dress towards the extra material needed. My area distribution officers have been instructed to watch supplies and to report any special difficulties.

Hon. Members

What does "W.X." mean?

Mr. Dalton

"W.X," means women's small outsize.

Mrs. Adamson

While thanking my right hon. Friend for that reply, might I ask him to keep his eye on the problem, because it is rather difficult for W.X. women to get suitable clothing at all?

Mr. Dalton

I know, and I hope that the subsidy of one coupon per dress will help them.

Mr. Bowles

What is the formula for a large in-size?

Mr. Dalton

I should like notice of that question.
