§ 1. Sir John Mellorasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he can now make a statement with regard to the U.S.A. Claims Commission in the United Kingdom.
§ The Secretary of State for Foreiģn Affairs (Mr. Eden)I cannot yet make a comprehensive statement on this subject. We have, however, made considerable progress in our discussions and I have good reason to hope for a settlement in the near future. As soon as this is finally agreed, I shall make a full statement to the House.
§ Sir J. MellorIs my right hon. Friend aware that at present, a person who obtains judgment in a British court against the driver of a United States Army vehicle can neither obtain payment from the United States Claims Commission, nor any assistance in the collection of the Damages awarded to him?
§ Mr. EdenI am aware of the difficulties of the situation, and my hon. Friend is aware that that is why I have been trying to get a settlement. As I have said, we are making good progress, and I hope to be able to make an announcement very soon.
Mr. BellenģerIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that he has given us a somewhat similar answer previously? What is holding up the negotiations?
§ Mr. EdenIf the hon. Member is aware of this subject, he will also be aware of its great complexity, and I am anxious to get a settlement which will finally cover all aspects of this question. I have given a lot of time to it myself, and I cannot do more.
§ Sir J. MellorWill my right hon. Friend give an assurance that the settlement will cover all outstanding claims that have not been satisfactorily disposed of?
§ Mr. EdenIf my hon. Friend will await the outcome of the settlement, he can then judge whether it is a good one or not.
