HC Deb 08 March 1944 vol 397 c2053
58. Mr. Hisģģs

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is aware that the first deductions under the Pay-as-you-Earn system will be made during the week in which Good Friday falls and that this day is a bank holiday; and, owing to the dis-organisation that will exist in many industrial concerns through having to do this complicated work with depleted staffs in a short week, will he transfer the bank holiday to Saturday, 8th April, so that wages can be drawn from the bank on Friday.

The Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Mr. Assheton)

The arrangements under which the banks will be closed on Good Friday rather than on Saturday, 8th April, were made after full consideration of all the relevant circumstances. My right hon. Friend is satisfied that the general public interest will be best served by these arrangements. The banks have already announced that where any customers urgently require banking facilities on Good Friday suitable local arrangements will be made.
