HC Deb 21 June 1944 vol 401 cc191-2
55. Sir T. Moore

asked the Minister of Supply what quota of paper is authorised annually to each book publisher; and whether any restrictions are imposed as to its use.

Sir A. Duncan

Publishers are allowed to acquire 40 per cent. of their consumption in the pre-war year. The only restrictions as to use are that it must be used for books and may not be transferred to another publisher without permission.

Sir T. Moore

Is the quota really maintained if the paper has been used to disturb our political unity and so hamper our war effort?

Viscountess Astor

Or to disturb our moral and social outlook by publishing filthy pictures?

Sir A. Duncan

The House is aware that it is not the function of the Ministry of Supply to be censors.

Mr. Gallacher

Can the Minister tell us why Tory Members are so anxious to advertise "Your M.P."?
