HC Deb 21 June 1944 vol 401 c192
58. Captain Plugge

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what were the circumstances under which the mails from Graham Land, South Shetlands and South Georgia, were accidentally destroyed by fire in the Falkland Islands; and what arrangements are being made to enable another such mail to be collected.

Colonel Stanley

A fire occurred in the town hall, Port Stanley, Falkland Islands, on the night of 17th April, 1944, which completely gutted the post office; and I regret to say that correspondence posted in Graham Land on 23rd March, in South Shetlands on 26th March, and in South Georgia on 4th April, 1944, lying in the post office awaiting despatch to this country, was destroyed in the fire. I am in communication with the Governor in the point raised in the second part of the Question.
