§ 22. Mr. Edgar Granvilleasked the Secretary of State for War if he has made inquiries into the practice of depositing military equipment and ammunition on 16 refuse and salvage dumps in certain areas of Suffolk, of which he has been advised; and what action he now proposes to take to deal with this.
§ Sir J. GriggThis matter has now been exhaustively investigated with both civil and military authorities, and I regret that, contrary to the regulations, some items of equipment which had still some life in them had been deposited in civilian refuse dumps. In the movement to battle areas of large bodies of troops, some malpractices of this nature—however regrettable—are, I am afraid, inevitable. The units in question are now elsewhere, and, in view of their present preoccupations, I do not propose to pursue this matter with them. But I have issued instructions to ensure that the present regulations are brought to the attention of all concerned, and that the regulations are strengthened where this is necessary.
