HC Deb 07 June 1944 vol 400 c1350
49. Mr. Rhys Davies

asked the Minister of Food whether, in view of the fact that only older men are left to undertake the work and the physical strain involved on them, he will take steps to reduce the flour and sugar sack now in use from two hundredweight to one hundredweight.

Colonel Llewellin

I should like to see the size of flour and sugar sacks reduced, but unfortunately packing materials, including jute, are still in short supply, and that and other factors make the reduction impossible at this time.

Mr. Davies

May I ask the right hon. and gallant Gentleman whether it is not possible, when new sacks are manufactured, that they shall be reduced in accordance with the suggestion contained in my Question?

Colonel Llewellin

Of course, not all those sacks do originate in this country, and that is one of the problems.
