HC Deb 06 June 1944 vol 400 c1193
34. Mr. Dobbie

asked the Secretary of State for War what orders are issued to units serving on the Burmese front to polish their buttons and blanco their equipment during rest periods; and if instructions will be given, owing to the nature of the campaign and the weather out there, for this practice to cease.

Sir J. Grigg

Each Army Commander is responsible for ensuring that the uniform and equipment of the soldiers under his command is maintained at the highest standard of cleanliness and smartness compatible with the conditions in which the troops are engaged. I have no knowledge of the orders issued on this matter by the local Army Commander in Burma, but he is clearly fully aware of the local conditions.

Mr. Goldie

Can the Minister say whether web equipment is being issued to these troops in order to do away with polishing?
