HC Deb 06 June 1944 vol 400 c1197
42. Mr. Jewson

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his experts have included the herring in the list of goods for post-war sale to Russia.

Mr. Dalton

I hope that it will be possible to develop a substantial export trade in herrings to Soviet Russia after the war. The Russians are now making a preliminary list of the goods they wish to buy from us; and we are making a similar list of what we wish to buy from them.

Mr. Woodburn

Will my right hon. Friend keep in mind that, in addition to Russia, the whole of the Scandinavian countries and the Balkan countries were great customers for herring, and that a large part of Scotland depends upon the prosperity of this industry?

Mr. Dalton

Nothing would delight me more than to see many more new markets developing.
