HC Deb 19 January 1944 vol 396 cc152-3
8. Mr. Hewlett

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the attention of His Majesty's Government has been called to the debt settlement with British creditors recently suggested by the Brazilian Government; whether His Majesty's representative in Rio de Janeiro has intervened to safeguard the position of British creditors; and, if not, whether he will instruct him to take up the matter with the Brazilian Government in an endeavour to secure more favourable terms.

Mr. Eden

I am aware of the position. The Council of Foreign Bondholders kept in the closest touch throughout the negotiations both with His Majesty's Government and His Majesty's representative in Rio de Janeiro, who was at all times available to lend any assistance in his power. In view of the statement issued by the council on 26th November last, to which I invite my hon. Friend's attention, I do not think that any useful purpose would be served now by the action he suggests.
