§ 42. Mr. Ellis Smithasked the Minister of Production if there are iron ore deposits within the vicinity of Millom and Asham; are there any under the River Duddom; has a recent survey been made of the country; and if he is taking notes of the deposits that the war needs demand.
§ Mr. LytteltonA survey of this area was made by His Majesty's Geological Survey 1268 in 1937–38, a summary of which was published in 1941. Certain of the deposits in the area have been sampled during the war by the home ores department of the Iron and Steel Control and the Geological Survey, as part of the intensive search made in this country for iron ore to meet our war-time needs. The available evidence shows that the working of any known deposits, at present unworked, would not justify the time and labour involved.
