HC Deb 27 April 1944 vol 399 c911
13. Mr. Driberg

asked the Secretary of State for India if he will take steps to secure the issue to British troops in India of other kinds of cigarette than the unpopular V brand and, at the earliest possible moment, the complete withdrawal of the V cigarette.

Mr. Amery

The manufacture of "V" brand cigarettes was abandoned in August, 1943, though small quantities continued to be manufactured until November, 1943. The "V" brand has now been replaced by other brands.

Mr. Driberg

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that these cigarettes were issued to troops in India as recently as 30th March; and how much longer will it take to exhaust the stocks?

Mr. Amery

I understand that they have now been entirely replaced by other brands.

Mr. A. Edwards

Has the Minister discovered what substitute for tobacco is used in the manufacture of these cigarettes?
