HC Deb 27 April 1944 vol 399 cc911-2
14. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for India whether Mr. Gandhi has been suffering from malaria; and what is his general health condition.

Mr. Amery

The Government of Bombay announced on the 19th April that Mr. Gandhi, who had been suffering from malaria, had had a normal temperature for the previous two days and was progressing satisfactorily. I have no later information.

Mr. Sorensen

May we take it that, following precedent, Mr. Gandhi is likely to be released on the ground of illness?

Mr. Amery

If the hon. Member will consider my answer, he will see there is no serious question of illness at this moment.

Mr. Sorensen

Is that not equally true of the precedent to which I refer?

Mr. George Griffiths

If Mr. Gandhi gets phlebitis will the Minister then consider the matter?
