HC Deb 20 April 1944 vol 399 c366
43. Lieut.-Colonel Sir Assheton Pownall

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the period which has elapsed since pence were minted and of the shortages of that denomination which have been experienced, he will now direct the coinage of pence to be resumed.

Sir J. Anderson

The utmost economy in the use of metals, fuel and man-power remains a most important consideration. I have, however, felt justified in authorising the Royal Mint to coin pence as opportunity offers, with a view to a limited issue, if such proves necessary, in the autumn of this year.
