HC Deb 20 April 1944 vol 399 c358
28. Mr. Thorne

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he can give any information in connection with the police raids made on the Bridgvic Club in Dean Street, when the manager was charged with using the club for unlawful gaming and other purposes; and what action he intends taking about the matter.

Mr. H. Morrison

Action has already been taken in this case. The Bridgvic Club, Dean Street, was entered by the police on two occasions recently under the Licensing and Gaming Acts, observation having disclosed liquor irregularities and unlawful gaming by means of an automatic machine; on the second occasion intoxicating liquor found on the premises was seized. On the 17th April the manager and secretary were charged with licensing and gaming offences and were convicted, the fines and costs amounting to £98 5s. The club was struck off the register, and an Order was also made for the destruction of the automatic gaming machine which had been seized by the police under the Gaming Act.

Mr. Thorne

I hope my right hon. Friend does not think that, because I am asking these questions, I am opposed to workmen's clubs?

Mr. Bowles

What happens to the liquor which is confiscated?

Mr. Morrison

I have not the least idea.
