HC Deb 23 September 1943 vol 392 cc372-3
39. Major Lyons

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he is satisfied that medical officers of health throughout the country are ensuring that the milk supplied to school children is clean and of good quality; that periodical tests, are being carried out; and that in doing so they are co-operating with the county war agricultural committees?

Mr. Butler

I am satisfied that medical officers of health take all practical steps by carrying out periodical tests and otherwise, to ensure that the milk supplied under the Milk in Schools Scheme is clean and of good quality. I understand that in county areas generally suitable cooperation exists with the county agricultural committees. My noble Friend the Minister of Food and I are proposing in the near future to conduct a census of the type of milk supplied to all schools in order to make provision for heat-treated or tuberculin tested milk where this is practicable and desirable and where neither of these types is now supplied.

Major Lyons

Can the right hon. Gentleman indicate how frequent these tests are?

Mr. Butler

I shall want notice of that question.
