HC Deb 23 September 1943 vol 392 c375
72. Mr. A. Edwards

asked the Minister of Health what action he proposes to take to implement the recommendation of the Select Committee on National Expenditure with regard to maternity allowances for women engaged in industry; and if he is aware that his delay is having serious effects on the health of women who tend, through economic necessity, to stay too long at work?

Mr. E. Brown

I have been making inquiries to ascertain the extent to which women engaged in industry do in fact remain at work to a late stage in pregnancy or return to work too soon after childbirth. These inquiries are nearly complete, and I hope to be able to make a statement shortly.
