HC Deb 23 September 1943 vol 392 c359
7. Mr. William Brown

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will take steps to avert the danger of the stoppage of the Edmonton trolley-bus depôt, owing to the favourable treatment given to the local chairman of the Transport and General Workers Union in the matter of late turns and total attendances?

Mr. Bevin

I understand that it has been the practice of the London Passenger Transport Board for many years to allow its employees all reasonable facilities to carry out duties falling to them when acting in a public capacity. I am informed that the facilities granted to the employee in question, who is both an officer of his union and a Borough Councillor, are similar to those granted to other employees and subject to the same conditions. I have no evidence to support the suggestion that he has received more favourable treatment than his colleagues.

Mr. Brown

Is it not the case that the facilities given to this man are completely withheld from officials of other unions under the L.P.T.B., and that this gives rise to grave discontent? Will he see that there is equality of treatment?

Mr. Bevin

I understand that facilities are given to every union that has an agreement with the Transport Board.

Mr. Brown

Is the Minister not aware that there are minority unions in this industry?

Mr. Bevin

I understand that there is one breakaway, union, which is most unfortunate.

Mr. Brown

May not that be due to the character of the union from which they broke away?
