HC Deb 23 September 1943 vol 392 cc370-1
11. Commander Bower

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that on the refusal of Mr. Constantine, a British subject of high standing and integrity, to leave the Imperial Hotel, Russell Square, at the request of the manager, Mr. Constantine was persuaded to leave by a high regional official of the Ministry of Labour; and whether the action of this official was taken with his approval?

Mr. Bevin

I presume the reference is to a colleague of Mr. Constantine on the staff of my Department who was on leave at the time and was one of the party for which rooms had been booked at this hotel. Any action which he took was taken in his capacity of colleague and friend and neither received nor required official sanction.
