HC Deb 22 September 1943 vol 392 c172
4. Mr. G. Strauss

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how many and of what nationalities were the political prisoners found in the Lipari Islands by our invading Forces; what are their present conditions of living; and what use has been or will be made of these enemies of Fascism in forwarding the cause of the United Nations?

Mr. Eden

The Allied Forces found that there were no political prisoners on the Lipari Islands when they landed there on 17th August. The prisoners had all been removed six weeks before.

Mr. Strauss

Have any other prisoners been found in other parts of Italy that we have occupied?

Mr. Eden

Yes, Sir. According to the latest information I have, about 100 political prisoners were found in or near Palermo, and they were all released.

Mr. Strauss

Will any use be made of these prisoners in the administration of or in recreating democratic feeling in Sicily and elsewhere?

Mr. Eden

I could not say until I have more information on the subject than I have at present. They are released and being cared for. I think they are in need of care.
