§ 31. Rear-Admiral Beamishasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will give particulars of the circumstances in which British constables have been wounded or killed on duty or otherwise in Palestine during the last 12 months; and whether compensation is available for such men and their dependants?
§ Mr. Emrys-EvansFive British police officers have been killed and one wounded during the last 12 months. I am circulating particulars in the OFFICIAL REPORT. In addition, three died and three were injured as a result of accidents whilst on duty. The answer to the last part of the Question is in the affirmative.
§ Rear-Admiral Beamish:Have the guilty parties been arrested and punished, and on whose behalf have these attacks been made? What were the fundamental reasons for these attacks?
§ Mr. Emrys-EvansI should have to have notice of that Question.
§ Following are the particulars:
- (a) Killed.
- (i) Constable H. Rowland, whilst searching an orange grove at Ramleh, was attacked by absconding offender and sustained fatal injuries, 15.:h October, 1942.
- (ii) Constable A. H. Smith was fired upon and killed by a suspicious character in Nablus, 2nd June, 1943.
- (iii) Constable A. J. Bailey as in (ii) above.
- (iv) Constable H. R. Perriam, on challenging a suspicious character in Hebron, was fired upon and. killed, 22nd June, 1943.
- (v) Constable A. G. Burnell, whilst assisting in rounding up absconding offenders near Beisan on 14th September.
- (b) Wounded.
- (i) Sergeant T. A. Stevens as in (a) (v) above.
