HC Deb 21 September 1943 vol 392 cc31-2
93. Mr. Tinker

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power how many open-cast mines are working now; how many have been finished since the war started and the total amount of coal mined from them?

Major Lloyd George

On 8th September there were 72 working sites and 73 from which coal had been worked out, from all of which the total production amounted to 4,074,879 tons. These figures do not include any sites worked by open-cast methods under private enterprise.

Mr. Foster

Could the Minister say the cost per ton of this output of coal?

Major Lloyd George

Not without notice.
