HC Deb 21 September 1943 vol 392 cc8-9
17. Captain Cobb

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he has any announcement to make as a result of his examination of the working of Army Council Instruction 440 of 1943?

Sir J. Grigg

Efforts are being made to improve the provisions of this Army Council Instruction, but, as my hon. and gallant Friend is aware, a number of legal and other difficulties are involved, and it is not yet certain what changes will be possible.

Captain Cobb

Do I understand that the object at which my right hon. Friend is aiming is to prevent a soldier being able to victimise his wife and family with the connivance of the War Office?

Sir J. Grigg

I would rather not give a categorical answer. Certainly that is the basis of the pressure which my hon. and gallant Friend is applying, and which has involved the consideration now being given.
