HC Deb 20 October 1943 vol 392 cc1375-6
42. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he has any information respecting discontent among colliery workers at the Enugu coal mine, Nigeria; and what action has been taken in the matter?

Mr. Emrys-Evans

The answer to the first part of the Question is in the affirmative. With regard to the second part of the Question, a fully qualified Colliery Manager with up-to-date experience of coalmining in this country has been appointed and has recently flown out to Nigeria. A deputy manager has also been appointed to deal specifically with staff matters.

Mr. Sorensen

If the first part of the reply is in the affirmative, what is the nature of the affirmation? May I have an answer to my Question?

Mr. Emrys-Evans

The Government are aware of it.

Mr. Sorensen

May we have the information arising out of that affirmation?

Mr. Emrys-Evans

No, Sir, we have not got any details of this specific grievance.
