asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the total sum saved since the commencement of the war in the purchase of National Savings Certificates and other small savings; and the proportion of such small savings to the total sum borrowed by the Government?

Following are the figures:—Subscriptions to small savings from 3rd September, 1939, to 22nd June, 1943:
