HC Deb 24 June 1943 vol 390 cc1318-9
68. Sir H. O'Neill

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether in view of the abolition of commissions on cashing Scottish and Northern Ireland banknotes in England, he will make arrangements with the banks for abolishing all commissions on cheques circulating within the United Kingdom?

The Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Mr. Assheton)

Any such charges are a matter for arrangement between the banks and their customers, and I should not be justified in making any representations in regard to them on the score of public interest.

69. Sir H. O'Neill

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether the new regulations as to cashing Scottish and Northern Irish banknotes in England will apply to Scottish banknotes cashed in Northern Ireland and vice versa?

Mr. Assheton

The abolition of the charge for encashment in England of Scottish and Irish banknotes has not been carried out by regulation, but is a change of practice which the Clearing Banks themselves have decided on. The terms on which banknotes are cashed in Scotland and Northern Ireland are matters for the banks operating in those parts of the Kingdom. I am having inquiries made of the banks concerned and will announce the result in due course.
