HC Deb 29 July 1943 vol 391 cc1769-70
90. Miss Ward

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he is aware that the provisions for Czech, Polish, Serbian and other Slavonic studies at London University depend entirely upon the generosity of Allied Governments who pay grants in aid to the School of Slavonic and East European Studies; and will he, in the interests of wider educational advantages and international good will, consider examining the whole question with a view to British co-operation?

Captain McEwen

My hon. Friend is misinformed. The School of Slavonic arid East European Studies receives a subvention from the general funds of London University, of which it forms part, and these funds, are themselves aided by a grant from the Treasury.

Miss Ward

Will my hon. and gallant Friend find out how much is allocated to the teaching of the languages which I have indicated?

Captain McEwen

I will endeavour to do so.

Mr. Hannah

Must not this whole matter depend on the number of students wanting such history?
