HC Deb 28 July 1943 vol 391 cc1567-8
43. Mr. Hannah

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether there is any shortage of qualified medical practitioners in any of the Colonies; and whether efforts will be made to enlist the services of alien doctors now granted temporary registration in this country when peace brings their present jobs to an end?

The Secretary of State for the Colonies (Colonel Oliver Stanley)

A shortage of qualified medical practitioners has occurred in some Colonies, mainly as a result of secondments for military service, and a number of Colonial Governments have, under powers conferred by the Emergency Powers (Colonial Defence) Order in Council, extended recognition to alien doctors on lines corresponding generally to those permitting such doctors to practice in this country. In regard to the second part of the Question, I have nothing to add to the statement made by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Health, in reply to my hon. Friend's Supplementary Question on 20th May.
