HC Deb 20 July 1943 vol 391 cc691-2
52. Miss Ward

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that the instructions governing the hours of attendance in Government offices provide for married and single women to have time allowed to discharge household responsibilities but that there is no such arrangement for men who run their own establishments; and whether he will take steps to remedy this discrimination?

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir Kingsley Wood)

Such general instructions as have been issued on this subject by the Treasury have not been confined to women staff. I have no reason to suppose that any Department would unreasonably refuse to adjust the hours of attendance of a male officer with heavy domestic responsibilities.

Miss Ward

In view of the fact that I am pleading on this occasion against injustice to men, would my right hon. Friend see that his answer is sent round to all Government Departments concerned?
