HC Deb 08 July 1943 vol 390 cc2261-2
68. Mr. David Adams

asked the Postmaster-General whether he will inquire into Post Office pensions with a view to the granting of a war bonus towards meeting the rising cost of commodities?

The Assistant Postmaster-General (Mr. Grimston)

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer given by my right hon. Friend the Financial Secretary to the Treasury to a similar Question by the hon. Member for Lincoln (Mr. Liddall) on l0th December last.

Mr. Adams

Would the Minister advise me what that reply was?

Mr. Grimston

Yes, it referred to a Debate which took place on 15th October.

Mr. Adams

Then can the Minister say what was said in that Debate?

Mr. Cluse

Could the Minister inform the House how it is possible for Post Office pensioners who receive 35s. a week to meet the increased cost of living, pay the higher taxes on tobacco and beer and still have enough left with which to pay their rent?

Mr. Grimston

I would refer the hon. Gentleman to the Debate of 15th October, when the matter was thoroughly discussed.
