§ 27. Mr. Thorneasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport what arrangements are being made to take the men, women and children down to the hopfields in Kent in August, in view of the bad transport and the overcrowding at London Bridge railway station last year?
§ Mr. Noel-BakerLast year arrangements were made by the National Farmers' Union and the Southern Railway Company for the transport of hop-pickers to Kent by special trains. Most of the hop-pickers, in fact, travelled by these special trains, on which there was no overcrowding. Similar arrangements are being made this year, and I hope that, if adequate notice is given of the number of passengers who intend to travel, no difficulty will arise.
