HC Deb 25 February 1943 vol 387 c276
12. Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Minister of Labour why the Greenock Employment Exchange singled out Mr. James Douglas, of 2, McDowall Street, Paisley, for transfer from the Royal Navy torpedo factory to Scott's shipbuilding works, in view of the fact that he had worked for 16 years at the torpedo factory and many younger and more suitable marine engineers with less torpedo experience were available and could have been transferred; and why Mr. Douglas was only given such short notice of the transfer which has caused him great hardship and loss?

Mr. Bevin

I am having inquiries made and will communicate with my hon. Friend.

Mr. Kirkwood

Is my right hon. Friend aware that this engineer was compulsorily removed at only a few days' notice and that it means a reduction of £3 a week, and will he see that the gratuity, which amounts to £45, will be returned?

Mr. Bevin

I will go into it in all its aspects.
