HC Deb 18 February 1943 vol 386 c1922
11. Wing-Commander James

asked the Minister of Labour whether he has now considered making arrangements whereby the police shall be instructed to see that conscientious objectors directed to work put in the full hours of that employment?

Mr. Bevin

Yes, Sir, but I do not regard police supervision as necessary or appropriate, nor can I suppose that these duties could be undertaken by the police without addition to their numbers. Periodical inquiries by my officers, and investigation of complaints are, in my opinion, sufficient to meet the needs of the case.

Wing-Commander James

When there are local complaints about a man exempted from service and directed to work of national importance not keeping time, would the Minister wish the local tribunal to report the matter to him?

Mr. Bevin

Certainly.
