HC Deb 17 February 1943 vol 386 cc1738-9
59. Mr. Butcher

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food what steps he is taking to prevent the wastage of bread?

Mr. Mabane

Waste of bread, as of any other foodstuff, is an offence under the Waste of Food Order, and prosecutions are instituted where such action is called for. Nevertheless, as the House will appreciate, whatever restriction might ultimately have to be imposed upon the consumption of bread the remedy for waste is and must remain principally in the hands of individual members of the public. Therefore my Department never allows the public or the trade to forget the need to avoid waste. Every medium of publicity is continually used to impress on all the importance of this matter and to make them aware of the positive ways in which they can help. I am satisfied that these exhortations are proving effective.

Mr. Butcher

Can my hon. Friend give an indication of the number of prosecutions in the last three months?

Mr. Mabane

I shall be very glad to do so if my hon. Friend will put down that Question.
