HC Deb 16 February 1943 vol 386 c1594
66. Mr. Thorne

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he can give any information in connection with the closing Order served under Defence Regulations 42B on the Panton Club, Panton Street, Haymarket; how long the club will be closed; whether this club has been raided before; and how many Orders have been served since Regulation 42B came into force?

The Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. Peake)

The premises in question were closed on 10th February by an Order of the Commissioner of Police under paragaph 1 of Regulation 42c, on the grounds that drunkenness was taking place and that a person taking part in the management had been concerned in the management of other premises which had been closed under the Regulation. The Order is in force for 12 months. The establishment was not a registered club, but the premises had previously been occupied by a club which was struck off the register in December last as a result of proceedings for illegal sale of liquor. The total number of premises closed by Orders under Regulation 42c since it came into force is 140.

Mr. Thorne

Will police officers keep a keen eye on this club with a view to its prohibition?

Mr. Peake

This place was open for only a few days before the Commissioner of Police took action.
