HC Deb 11 February 1943 vol 386 c1424
14. Mr. Bowles

asked the Minister of Health whether he has considered the resolution, a copy of which has been forwarded to him, passed by the hospital committee of Alfred Herbert, Limited, of Coventry, complaining of the many problems arising from the lack of beds at the local hospital; and what action he proposes to take?

Mr. E. Brown

Yes, Sir. I am afraid that the supply of labour and materials does not at present permit a further extension to the hospital referred to in the resolution. I am advised that the total accommodation available in this and other hospitals in the area is adequate.

Captain Strickland

Is not the Minister aware that the nurses in this voluntary hospital are compelled to sleep away from the hospital because of this shortage, and that a very serious position arises?

Mr. Brown

Yes, of course, but there is a very serious position about labour and materials.
