HC Deb 09 February 1943 vol 386 c1145
3. Mr. Stokes

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he will consider making arrangements for invasion warning in all areas similar to those made in areas where there are no church bells and so restore the bells for the service for which they were intended?

Sir J. Grigg

No, Sir. I know of no alternative to church bells which could be used satisfactorily throughout the country.

Mr. Stokes

As there are already many cases where church bells are not available, what is the difficulty in making similar arrangements for the whole of the country?

Sir J. Grigg

There is no arrangement as satisfactory as church bells for those areas in which they are available.

Mr. Driberg

Do the Regional Commissioners consider the present arrangement satisfactory?

Sir J. Grigg

I do not know the views of the Regional Commissioners, but I know the views of the Minister of Home Security.
