HC Deb 03 February 1943 vol 386 c887
35. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, in view of recent official statements regarding immigration, settlement and land policy in East African Colonies, he will announce a comprehensive policy at an early date, to include Tanganyika European settlement, and in particular, the safeguarding of native rights and effective treatment of the African land problem?

Colonel Stanley

I am not aware what are the precise official statements which my hon. Friend has in mind. The question of general development and the possibilities of settlement in East Africa are continuously receiving attention, but I do not think that an announcement of a comprehensive policy could usefully be made at this juncture. My hon. Friend may be assured, however, that African interests, with regard to both present and future needs and opportunities, will be most carefully borne in mind.
